Sony A7 V Overview
Power in Every Frame
Sony a7 V is a hybrid mirrorless camera that balances resolution, speed, and portability for demanding creators. It delivers strong stills, advanced video, and modern AI autofocus, so you can cover anything from sports and wildlife to daily vlogs and event work with one body.
New Partially Stacked Sensor and Upgraded Processing

33MP Exmor RS CMOS Full-Frame Sensor
Sony a7 V is the first Alpha camera with a 33MP partially stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor, which reads out faster than the a7 IV and cuts rolling shutter in both stills and video. This design supports up to 16 stops of dynamic range, a native ISO range of 100–51,200, and an electronic shutter that reaches 1/16,000 second for bright scenes and fast action.

BIONZ XR2 Processor
The new BIONZ XR2 processor integrates an AI processing unit that improves autofocus, color accuracy, and auto white balance from frame to frame. This extra power also enables blackout‑free 30 fps bursts with full AF/AE, oversampled 7K full‑frame 4K 60p, and 4K 120p using a Super 35 area.

Pre-Capture & Speed Boost
Pre‑Capture lets the camera start buffering images when you half‑press the shutter, so when you fully press it you can save moments from up to about one second before the click. Speed Boost assigns a faster burst rate to a function button, letting you jump from your normal continuous mode to high‑speed shooting up to 30 fps for critical action.
Selectable Raw File Types and Composite RAW Function
The camera offers compressed HQ RAW, lossless compressed RAW, and a lightweight RAW option, so you can choose between maximum quality and smaller file sizes depending on the job. You can extend RAW processing with Sony’s Imaging Edge desktop software and use the Composite RAW function to merge 4, 8, or 16 high‑speed frames into a cleaner, HDR‑like image with less noise, especially at higher ISOs.

5-Axis Image Stabilization
Sony a7 V uses in‑body 5‑axis stabilization rated up to around 7.5 stops in the center, helping you shoot sharper handheld photos and smoother video in low light. A refined gyro sensor, updated algorithms, and better communication with stabilized lenses all work together to control shake more precisely across the frame.
Upgraded AF and AI Subject Recognition

Autofocus is a major upgrade: the camera keeps 759 phase‑detect points that cover about 94% of the image area and can focus down to roughly –4 EV, but now adds a powerful AI unit for recognition. It can detect and track humans, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains, and airplanes, with faster recognition of wildlife compared to the a7 IV and more reliable Real‑time Eye AF and Real‑time Tracking for sports and portraits.

- Human pose estimation analyzes the subject’s head and body, which helps the camera keep focus even when faces turn away or another person briefly blocks the subject. You also get new XS and XL Flexible Spot sizes, customizable AF areas for unusual subjects, Auto Subject Recognition so you do not need to choose a subject type, and Full‑time DMF so you can grab the focus ring and adjust manually at any moment while AF remains active.

Video Recording

7K Oversampled 4K Recording
- Sony a7 V reads the full width of its 33MP sensor to create oversampled 7K footage and then downsamples it to detailed 4K 60p in full‑frame mode. Switch to Super 35 and you can record 4K 120p or Full HD up to 240p for smooth slow‑motion clips.

Recording Flexibility
- A redesigned heat management system, including a dedicated internal heatsink, helps maintain performance during longer takes at high resolutions and frame rates. The camera records 10‑bit 4:2:2 internally, supports up to four‑channel audio with compatible accessories, offers a new reference mic and wind‑noise reduction, and adds Dynamic Active stabilization that combines IBIS with electronic correction for steadier handheld video.

Breathing Compensation reduces focus breathing with supported lenses, while AI‑assisted Framing Stabilizer can crop and keep a chosen subject centered automatically, which is helpful for solo shooters or interviews.
Advanced Color Control
- S‑Cinetone gives you a cinematic look with pleasing skin tones and controlled highlights that match Sony’s Cinema Line and FX‑series cameras. For maximum grading flexibility, S‑Log3 offers over 15 stops of dynamic range, and you can import custom LUTs through Sony’s cloud and use them for monitoring or baked‑in looks depending on your workflow.

Body Design and Connectivity

3.68m-Dot EVF and 4-Axis Multi-Angle LCD
- Sony a7 V uses a 3.2‑inch 4‑axis multi‑angle touchscreen that tilts and flips, giving you the benefits of both a tilt and a side‑flip screen for stills and video. It displays a wide DCI‑P3 color gamut, while the 3.68‑million‑dot Quad VGA OLED EVF offers 0.78x magnification, a 120 fps refresh option, and adjustable brightness and color.

Ports and Interface
- The camera includes a full‑size HDMI Type A port for a sturdier connection to external recorders and monitors. Two USB‑C ports separate data and power duties: one USB 3.2 Gen 2 port handles high‑speed transfers and external storage, while the second USB‑C focuses on power delivery and in‑body charging, and you also get 3.5mm mic and headphone jacks plus a digital audio Multi Interface Shoe for advanced Sony microphones and XLR adapters

Versatile and Durable Design
- Sony a7 V provides two card slots: one combo slot for CFexpress Type A/SD UHS‑II and one extra SD UHS‑II slot, so you can split file types, back up in‑camera, or use overflow recording. It runs on the NP‑FZ100 battery, delivers roughly 630 shots with the EVF or about 750 with the rear LCD, and uses a magnesium alloy chassis, reinforced grip and mount, and extensive weather sealing around doors and seams for reliable use with heavy lenses and in harsh conditions.

Connectivity
- Built-in Wi-Fi and NFC enables the sony a7 v to instantly share imagery to mobile devices for direct sharing online. This wireless connectivity supports both 5 and 6 GHz bands, along with 2×2 MIMO, for a strong, reliable connection to enable rapid transfers, remote control, and wireless tethered shooting.

- Bluetooth connectivity allows for location data acquisition.
- Supports 4K webcam use and is UVC/UAC compliant for simple operation. Internal recording is also supported while live streaming.
- Imaging Edge Remote for desktop supports PC Remote shooting via the Wi-Fi connection or tethered by the wired USB-C port. An updated data transfer control also makes it possible to transfer files from an SD card over Wi-Fi using the Imaging Edge Mobile app even when the camera is powered off.
