12.1MP Exmor RS BSI CMOS Sensor and BIONZ XR Processor

The updated 12.1MP Exmor RS full-frame sensor is back-illuminated, enhancing clarity while minimizing noise. It supports a native ISO range of 80-102400, expandable to 40–409600—ideal for low-light environments. The sensor reads data twice as fast as previous models, and with the BIONZ XR processor, it reduces rolling shutter by 3x and improves overall processing speed by up to 8x. Together, they enable up to 10 fps shooting and capture up to 1000 uncompressed RAW images continuously.

Video Recording

UHD 4K 120p Video, 10-Bit 4:2:2 Internal Recording

- UHD 4K at 120p with full pixel readout and no binning.
- Internal 10-bit 4:2:2 recording across all modes.
- Output 16-bit RAW via full-size HDMI A port for maximum editing flexibility.
Two new codecs:
- XAVC HS (HEVC/H.265) for high-quality files at smaller sizes.
- XAVC S-I for intraframe encoding up to 600 Mb/s for consistent quality.
Slow-motion shooters will appreciate 4x or 5x slow motion in 4K and 240p in Full HD. Plus, there are no recording time limits, and an upgraded heat sink allows up to 60 minutes of continuous 4K60p recording.

Recording Flexibility

The high-speed, 120 fps recording enables 4x and 5x slow-motion movie recording with the frame rate playback set to either 30p or 24p or, if moving down to Full HD resolution, an effective 240p frame rate is also available for even greater motion control.
Suiting long-form recording, the a7S III does not have any recording time limits to allow for unlimited clip lengths. The camera’s physical design also features an improved heat-dissipating structure to promote longer possible recording times, up to an approximate 60-minute recording time at 4K60p.

Advanced Color Control

S-Cinetone delivers rich skin tones and cinematic color, matching Sony’s FX6 and FX9.
Advanced controls let you tweak gamma, knee, and color levels.
S-Log2 and S-Log3 provide wide dynamic range, ideal for color grading.

Autofocus and Image Stabilization

Fast Hybrid AF System

Tracks subjects with 759 phase-detection and 425 contrast-detection points. Real-time Eye AF works on humans and animals, and Real-time Tracking keeps moving subjects in focus. Fine-tune transitions with 7 AF speed steps and 5 sensitivity settings.

5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Image Stabilization

The built-in IBIS system delivers up to 5.5 stops of compensation—working with any lens, including adapted ones. Active IS mode adds even more stabilization during video capture, ensuring smoother footage.

Body Design and Connectivity

Tru-Finder EVF and Vari-Angle Touchscreen LCD

The QXGA OLED Tru-Finder EVF delivers a stunning viewing experience with a 9.44-million dot resolution and 0.9x magnification. It provides bright, detailed, and immersive eye-level monitoring. A dedicated 120 fps High Quality mode ensures ultra-smooth motion, while the long 25mm eye point and 41° field of view enhance comfort during extended use. For added convenience, the outer element is treated with a fluorine coating, making it easier to clean.

The a7S III is the first in the a7-series to feature a side-opening 3.0-inch vari-angle touchscreen LCD with 1.44 million dots. This design supports flexible shooting angles—whether above, below, or in front of the camera—ideal for vloggers and self-recording creators. The touchscreen interface allows for intuitive menu navigation and shooting control.

Sony also redesigned the camera’s menu system. It now offers a more intuitive layout that adapts to different workflows, whether shooting video or stills. Combined with the touchscreen, navigation feels faster and more responsive than ever.

Versatile and Durable Design

The a7S III features dual memory card slots that support both CFexpress Type A and SD UHS-II cards. You can configure the slots for backup recording, file separation, or overflow capture—offering maximum flexibility in demanding workflows.

Built from magnesium alloy, the body balances strength and lightness. Sony reinforced the lens mount to better support heavy lenses and redesigned the grip for improved comfort during long handheld sessions.

The camera is designed for professional reliability. It includes enhanced weather-sealing around all major openings—battery door, terminal ports, and body seams—making it resistant to dust and moisture in tough environments.

Powering the system is the high-capacity NP-FZ100 battery, which delivers up to 510 shots or 80 minutes of video when using the EVF, and 600 shots or 95 minutes using the rear LCD.
