Bringing the speed Sony mirrorless shooters have been waiting for, the a9 Mirrorless Camera takes impressive multimedia capabilities and ups the processing capabilities for ultra-fast continuous shooting.

Full-Frame Stacked Sensor and BIONZ X Processing

24.2MP Full-Frame Exmor RS CMOS Sensor

The 24.2MP Exmor RS CMOS sensor offers fast readout speeds and excellent detail. It supports continuous shooting at up to 20 fps and UHD 4K video recording. With a back-illuminated design, the sensor provides clean results in low light. The ISO range extends to 204,800 with reduced noise. Photographers can also capture 14-bit uncompressed RAW for maximum editing flexibility.

BIONZ X Image Processor and Electronic Shutter

Working with the sensor, the BIONZ X processor ensures fast performance. You can shoot up to 362 JPEGs or 241 RAW images in one burst. The electronic shutter reaches 1/32,000 sec for bright conditions. AF/AE metering runs 60 times per second for precise tracking. The blackout-free viewfinder gives accurate framing of moving subjects.

Autofocus and Image Stabilization

The hybrid AF system uses 693 phase-detection points and 25 contrast points, covering 93% of the frame. It locks onto moving subjects with High-Density Tracking AF. Eye AF keeps portraits sharp by focusing on eyes. Lock-on AF, Expand Flexible Spot, and Focus Magnifier add more control.

Built-in 5-axis image stabilization reduces blur by up to 5 stops. It compensates for pitch, yaw, roll, and shift, ensuring stable results with any lens, even adapted ones.

5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Image Stabilization

Packed into the robust-but-compact body is a 5-stop effective 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization system that compensates for five different types of camera shake encountered during handheld shooting of stills and video. This allows users to confidently use any lens, even adapted lenses, for critical imaging without encountering blur from camera shake.

For long focal lengths, the system will correct for pitch and yaw adjustments. Macro and high-magnification imagery, on the other hand, will benefit from the inclusion of horizontal and vertical shift compensation. All shooting styles will get usage out of the roll compensation. All 5 axes of stabilization will function at all times, even when used with third-party lenses and adapters or lenses with built-in optical stabilization.

UHD 4K Video Recording in XAVC S Format

The a9 records UHD 4K video up to 30 fps with full-pixel readout and 2.4x oversampling for maximum detail. Full HD 1080p recording supports up to 120 fps for slow motion. Footage is saved in the XAVC S format at 100 Mb/s. Users can also record clean 4K 4:2:2 externally over HDMI.

Body Design

The Quad-VGA OLED Tru-Finder has a 3.68m-dot resolution and 0.78x magnification. It supports 120 fps refresh for smooth viewing and ZEISS T* coating to reduce reflections. A tilting 3.0″ 1.44m-dot touchscreen allows touch focus and flexible shooting angles.
The magnesium-alloy body is lightweight, weather-sealed, and durable. Dual SD card slots provide backup or overflow storage, with one slot supporting UHS-II. Dedicated controls like stacked dials, an AF-ON button, and a multi-selector make operation efficient.

Connectivity

The a9 includes a LAN terminal for fast FTP transfer. Built-in Wi-Fi, NFC, and Bluetooth enable easy sharing, remote control, and location data. The PC sync terminal supports flash systems.
