Improved Processing Engine
The BIONZ XR processor delivers up to 8x more power than previous generations. It ensures faster overall performance, wide sensitivity, and advanced AI-based autofocus. Moreover, it minimizes rolling shutter and motion distortion for clean results when capturing moving subjects.
The system supports 10 fps continuous shooting at full resolution with the mechanical shutter. Users can record up to 583 compressed RAW images or over 1000 JPEGs in a single burst with full-time AF/AE.
Updated 5-Axis Image Stabilization
Sony redesigned the in-body stabilization system to offer up to 8 stops of shake reduction. It combines a high-performance gyro sensor with a new algorithm for precise control. Additionally, improved communication between the camera and lens enhances stabilization accuracy.
For video, Active IS mode adds even smoother stabilization. The updated digital IS algorithm delivers the best performance when paired with OSS-enabled lenses.

- A new auto-exposure algorithm detects skin tones more effectively, improving portrait exposure reliability by 20%—even in direct sunlight or backlit conditions. In addition, deep learning technology with visible light and IR sensors improves both color reproduction and auto white balance.

Humans: tracks body and head positions, with Eye AF accuracy improved by 60% through human pose estimation.

Real-time Tracking benefits from AI-based subject recognition for following moving subjects, making it particularly well-suited to sports and action subjects. Also, Human pose estimation allows the camera to distinguish between multiple people and maintain focus on the targeted subject; even if someone crosses in front, the camera maintains focus on the key person.
Advanced Fast Hybrid AF
The 693-point phase-detection system covers 79% of the full-frame area (100% APS-C crop). It offers sensitivity down to -4 EV, ensuring precision in low light.
Full-time DMF lets users adjust focus manually while AF is active. For continuous bursts at 10 fps, the AF system tracks subjects between frames. Moreover, Focus Bracketing captures up to 299 sequential frames with shifted focus points, ideal for composite depth-of-field effects.
AF During Video Recording
- The a7R V fully supports Real-time Eye AF for humans, animals, and birds while filming. The Focus Map overlays colors to visualize depth of field, while AF Assist lets users shift smoothly to manual focus for creative racking. Focus Breathing Compensation also ensures consistent framing during focus transitions, reducing distortion with compatible E-mount lenses.
Video Recording
8K 24p and 4K 60p Support
The high-resolution sensor and processor enable 8K 24p and 4K 60p 10-bit video using the full sensor width with pixel readout. In Super 35 crop, users can record up to 6.2K oversampled 4K30 for added sharpness.
The camera supports internal 10-bit 4:2:2 at up to 4K60, or 16-bit RAW output over HDMI for greater flexibility. Simultaneous internal 4K and external RAW recording is also available.
Recording Flexibility
Choose between XAVC HS (H.265) for smaller file sizes and XAVC S-I (All-I) for maximum quality. In Full HD, 120 fps recording provides smooth 4x and 5x slow motion at 30p or 24p playback.
The camera has no recording time limit, and its new heat-dissipating design allows for longer takes without overheating.
Advanced Color Control
S-Cinetone delivers cinematic mid-tones, soft colors, and natural skin tones, matching FX9, FX6, a1, and a7S III footage. Users also have access to S-Log2, S-Log3, HLG, and BT.2020 color space for wide grading flexibility.
S-Log2 squeezes up to 1300% more dynamic range than standard Rec.709. Meanwhile, S-Log3 provides a 15+ stop dynamic range, offering detailed control in shadows and mid-tones.
Body Design and Connectivity
9.44m-Dot EVF and 4-Axis Multi-Angle LCD
- Sporting a new, more functional LCD design, theSony a7R V has a 4-axis multi-angle LCD monitor that combines the best assets of both tilting and side-open/flip-out vari-angle designs.
- This 3.2″ 2.1m-dot LCD also has a touchscreen design and a DCI-P3 wide gamut for accurate color monitoring.
- An impressive QXGA OLED Tru-Finder EVF features a high 9.44m-dot resolution and 0.9x magnification for exceptionally bright, clear, and detailed eye-level viewing.
- The EVF permits 120 fps playback for smooth motion rendering and the finder’s physical design has a long 25mm eye point, 41° field of view, and features a fluorine coating on the outermost viewfinder element to benefit cleaning.
