Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 STF GM OSS Overview
The Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 STF GM OSS is a premium medium-telephoto prime for full-frame E-mount cameras. It delivers exceptionally smooth bokeh and outstanding image clarity. With its unique Smooth Trans Focus (STF) optical design and apodization element, it produces beautifully defocused backgrounds while maintaining sharpness across the frame. G Master optics, including XA and ED elements plus Nano AR Coating, minimize aberrations and boost contrast. Optical SteadyShot stabilization, fast autofocus, a 1.87 ft close focus, and weather sealing make it perfect for portraits, fine art, and creative photography.
The Bokeh Master
This lens blends smooth bokeh with fine detail. The STF technology uses an apodization filter to create soft, circular out-of-focus highlights in both foreground and background.
The apodization element acts like a radial ND filter, clear in the center and denser at the edges. It enhances selective focus and shallow depth of field effects. The aperture ranges from f/2.8 to f/20, with a T-stop equivalent of T5.6 to T22. The rounded 11-blade diaphragm further improves bokeh quality.
Smooth Trans Focus
- Optical design incorporates an apodization (APD) element that helps to improve the quality of bokeh. This element, which resembles a radially graduated ND filter that tapers from clear in the center to denser around the edges, produces more circular out-of-focus highlights for more pleasing selective focus and shallow depth of field effects.
- An aperture range of f/2.8 to f/20 is available, however the implementation of the apodization filter renders this range as T5.6 to T22.
- A rounded 11-blade diaphragm further contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing shallow depth of field techniques.
G Master Optics
Autofocus and Macro Switching
The Direct Drive Super Sonic wave Motor AF system delivers quick, quiet, and precise focusing. Internal focusing keeps the lens length stable and handling smooth.
A macro switching ring offers two focus ranges: 2.8’–infinity or 1.9–3.3′. This enables a maximum magnification of 0.25x for close-up detail. The customizable focus hold button provides instant control and can be programmed for additional functions.
Handling and Physical Design
- Optical SteadyShot minimizes camera shake for sharper handheld shots, and it works with in-body stabilization for greater effect. The manual aperture ring can be de-clicked for silent operation during video. Weather sealing and rubberized control rings ensure dependable handling in tough conditions.
