Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II Overview
Wide-Angle Versatility for Stills & Video
Sony completes its trio of f/2.8 G Master zoom lenses with the FE 16-35mm GM II. It combines G Master performance with the smallest and lightest form in its class. This wide-angle zoom brings major optical, focusing, and handling upgrades for photographers and videographers.
G Master Image Quality

This lens delivers prime-like performance with enhanced resolution, clarity, and smooth bokeh. Its constant f/2.8 aperture allows shooting in low light and achieving a shallow depth of field. One Super ED and two ED elements reduce chromatic aberration for better color fidelity. Five aspherical elements, including three XA, minimize distortion and improve bokeh quality.
Faster AF and Floating Focus Mechanism

The redesigned focus system improves speed, close-up capability, and control. Four XD linear motors deliver faster, quieter, and more precise AF than the previous DDSSM system. It can track fast-moving subjects at up to 30 fps, even when stopped down. The floating focus mechanism maintains image quality across the range, with a minimum focus distance of 8.6″ and 0.32x magnification. Internal focusing keeps balance and responsiveness consistent during zooming.
Improved Control and Video Capabilities

This lens minimizes focus breathing, focus shift, and axial shift during zooming for accurate composition. It supports Breathing Compensation on compatible Sony cameras. Linear Response MF offers natural manual focus control. The manual aperture ring can be de-clicked for silent operation, and zoom torque is adjustable for smoother handling.
Compact, Lightweight, and Robust Design

Weighing about 20% less and measuring 10% smaller than its predecessor, the GM II remains weather-sealed and durable for demanding conditions. The manual aperture ring offers tactile control and can lock in ‘A’ for camera-based adjustment. Two customizable focus hold buttons and a focus mode switch provide quick control. The hybrid metal-plastic build balances durability and light weight. Rubber gaskets protect against dust and moisture. A fluorine-coated front element repels water and oil. The redesigned hood is shorter and slimmer to match the lens’s compact profile.
